This brash union organizer's personal courage helped shape the 20th century. As leader of the Solidarity movement he led Poland out of communism. His contribution to the end of communism in Europe, and hence the end of the cold war, stands beside those of Pope John Paul II and Soviet leader Gorbachev. He became Poland's first democratically elected president in 1990. He has received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Medal of Freedom, and the Award of the Free World.
